Es Castell

Es Castell is situated on the Port of Maó and is the most easterly town in Spain and is the most British town of them all. It was built during the 18th century by the British engineers and formally known as Georgetown (in the honour of George III of Britain). The actual town was founded around the construction of Sant Felip Castle (Castell de Sant Felip) located at the mouth of Maò harbour until the British removed it.Less than three kilometres away lays the peaceful creek of Cala San Esteve and here you can visit the fascinating Fort Marlborough castle, dated 18th century. Regular guided tours are available during the summer months.

If you take a look at the street plan you will note that the streets preserve the original cross-sectioned streets reflecting its British roots and that there is a parade square together with the British barracks, with Georgian architecture featuring bow windows and typical "guillotine" windows. Just in front of the Town Hall, characteristically painted terracotta red, stands the Military Museum, open to the public.

For fine dining and holiday shopping by the water’s edge, try the Cales Fonts harbour area overlooking the lazaretto quarantine island.
