
For a small island we have do have some unique and interesting events, such as the magical “Full moon party in August performed in the old sandstone quarry Ses pedreres de S’Hostal in Ciutadella” The Líthica Cultural Association arranges this night and other events throughout the summer.
Throughout the balmy summer nights you can enjoy the Summer Musical Festival (Festival de Música d'estiu) promoted by young musicians of Ciudadella. These classical music concerts are held, mainly, in the Claustre del Seminari. Not to be beaten the young musicians of Mao also organise an International Music Festival which is held in the beautiful theatre called the Teatro Principal of Maó.
Regular organ recitals can be heard in the Santa María Church in Maó; classical music played from an early 19C. neo-gothic organ can be enjoyed in this magnificent building.
Returning to the Teatro Principal of Maó, a visit is most recommended as the building is one of the oldest opera sceneries in Spain. The building was constructed in 1829, according to the aesthetic norms of the 18th century Italian theatres, the architect was actually Italian. Each year the theatre presents an Opera Week (Semana de la Ópera) featuring important stars of the beautiful song. Regular theatre productions and cultural programmes are also presented here. Another grand theatre on the west coast is the Teatre de's Born in Ciutadella, regular plays are performed and since 1970 it has been the scene of the annual Theatre Born prize giving.
The island does not have many discos, "Cova d'en Xoroi", yet in the resort of Cala en Porter we have one of the most famous disco’s in Spain. The disco is built into a natural cliff and has visiting international DJ`s throughout the summer season.
For an authentic Minorcan night out, go along to the fishermen cave Es Cau in Cala Corb, Es Castell and listen to traditional sailor's songs accompanied by the captain's guitar, all musicians and singers are welcome to join in.
If your passion tends towards the contemporary and jazz then you are in for a treat, as many jam session can be enjoyed whilst on the island. Clubs and concert cafes regularly meet to loosen their imagination with improvising melodies. Every year the island arranges the International Jazz Festival, permitting jazz-blues–swing lovers to listen to the most important bands playing on the international circuit.
Due to the hot summer nights it’s quite normal to watch a show in the open air, this includes films and music. In Mao the open air cinema is situated in the inner courtyard of the Cloister of Carmen (Claustre de Carme). Other towns also offer evening outdoor events.
For the little ones in the family we have water parks, a zoo, and horse riding shows that please the whole family for the spectacular programme and brilliant horsemanship.
