Ferreries

This pretty whitewashed town lies close to some of the islands most spectacular scenery, with natural gorges to the south and high peaks, such as Santa Agueda to the north with a height of 264mts. The most important gorge leading to the south is called Algendar.

The municipal area dates from the 13th century although the main town`s church of Saint Bartholomew was built during the 18th century. Ferreries, today is an important industrial town for shoes and furniture, to name but a few. On a Saturday morning in the central Esplanade (Plaza España) there is a homemade produce market, with cheeses, cold meat specialities, spicy local sausages, typical pastries, cakes, jams and natural honey. On the handicraft side you will see macramé (coarse lacework), etched glass and leatherwork; and, undoubtedly, the abarca sandals. The fair is serenaded to the sounds of island music and folklore dance, so please feel welcome to experience this unique opportunity to enjoy a feel of Minorca.

Within the town is the islands Natural Museum (Centro de Natura de Menorca) offering a permanent exhibition showing the island's natural heritage and why U.N.E.S.C.O. awarded the island the “Biosphere Reserve” award.

Ferreries, has some good tapas bars, interesting boutiques and is the home of Mascaro, an international shoe maker, leatherwear, jewellery design and furniture manufacture all add to the towns prosperity. Most of the factories sell direct to the public.

Once you have had your fill of shops why not discover the paradise of its natural surroundings; a route through one of the beautiful gorges maybe where you can observe rich vegetation and 80 metre high cliffs offering shelter to bird and animal life.
